The National Aboriginal Lands Managers Association (NALMA) Board of Directors and Staff proudly honour and celebrate the retirement of **A. Leona Irons, Founding Executive Director**, recognizing 26 years of extraordinary leadership, dedication, and service to First Nation lands management across Canada.

Since NALMA’s establishment in April 2000, Leona has been a driving force behind the organization’s growth, helping transform a shared vision into a nationally respected association dedicated to strengthening First Nation lands management capacity, professional development, and community empowerment.

Under her leadership, NALMA supported the establishment of eight Regional Lands Associations, advanced professional certification through the Professional Lands Management Certification Program (PLMCP) and developed specialized training initiatives that continue to equip lands managers with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to serve their communities.

Leona’s influence extends far beyond organizational achievements. Through mentorship, collaboration, and an unwavering belief in the abilities of First Nation lands managers, she has helped build a national network of professionals united by a shared responsibility to protect, manage, and care for First Nation lands.

Her exceptional contributions have earned national recognition, including her appointment to the Order of Canada in September 2025 for her work in advancing the stewardship and governance of First Nation lands.

Yet, among her many accomplishments, Leona’s greatest legacy may be found in the people she has inspired, the relationships she has nurtured, and the opportunities she has helped create for future generations.

Known for her determination, wisdom, humility, kindness, and unwavering commitment to First Nations, Leona has led with both strength and heart. Her leadership has always been grounded in the belief that meaningful progress begins with people, community, and a shared vision for the future.

As Leona once reflected: “We have to make our ancestors proud of what we do, in looking after the lands.”

Your legacy will continue through every professional supported, every relationship strengthened, and every First Nation community empowered through the work you helped establish.

On behalf of the NALMA Board of Directors and Staff, thank you for 26 remarkable years. We wish you happiness, good health, and countless blessings as you begin this well-deserved new chapter.
