The Survey Unit provides guidance and support to First Nations in all aspects of surveying, mapping, and geographic information systems (GIS). This unit also offers training on using GIS technology for land management purposes. The Survey Unit is dedicated to building the capacity of First Nation communities to utilize modern surveying and mapping techniques in the management and development of their lands.
The Survey Program provides funding and contract administration services for survey projects for eligible First Nations, identified from the Land Use Planning process as well as working with other Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) identified projects.

Survey Program Objectives
- Delivery of Survey projects are for First Nations throughout Canada with the exception of operational First Nations under the Framework Agreement on First Nation Land Management Land Management Act (FA).
- The Survey Program is delivered through NALMA as part of their Infrastructure Project Funding.
- Typical priorities of surveys recommended by ISC:
- Set Asides – Section 18(2).
- Land Designations – Section 53.
- First Nation Allotments – Section 20.
- Permits – Section 28(2).
- Re-survey of Exterior Boundaries.
- Additions to Reserve.
- Land Use Mapping for Band Land Purposes.
- Collaborate with ISC- HQ, NRCan-HQ, and their respective regions to:
- Ensure project readiness.
- Provide ongoing communication to ensure issues are addressed during all phases of the project; and
- Program delivery available in both offcial languages as required.
Contract Administration
NALMA receives the recommended projects and begins the survey
process:
1. A formal request to proceed is sent to the First Nation.
2. Request for quote is sent to the Canada Lands Surveyor.
3. Evaluation of quote.
4. Award the contract.
5. Monitoring the contract.
6. Payment of invoices upon project completion.
Technical Support
NALMA provides First Nation’s with technical support on issues in regard to surveying by providing sketches, advice on surveying related matters, liaise with Geographic Information Systems GIS professionals, Association of Canada Lands Surveyors (ACLS), Natural Resources Canada(NRCan),
Surveyor General Branch (SGB), Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) as necessary.
